It hasn't failed me yet. \u00a0I put out the first new transplants of the year, and the next day \u00a0. . . .snow! \u00a0 The forecast was for rain showers today, and a high of 8 degrees C. But instead, we got snow, and a high<\/strong><\/em> of 1\u00ba C. \u00a0You wouldn't guess that just 5 days ago it was 28\u00ba C!<\/h5>\n
Fortunately we shelter all our early transplants with hoop houses; the fabric cover gives the vegetables approximately 2 degrees of protection. \u00a0And we plant hardy veggies in April: \u00a0the 60 foot hoop house above is almost all lettuce. \u00a0The Romaines, Buttercrunch and Winter Density lettuces can all handle a bit of frost, especially since they are young. \u00a0And despite the snow today, last night's low was only 0\u00ba C.<\/h5>\n
But what about tonight? \u00a0The forecast is for a low of 0\u00ba C again. \u00a0Three degrees of variance could put us down to -4. \u00a0But the hoop house will give us 2 degrees of protection, and the lettuce can handle another two degrees, so we are probably OK. \u00a0And the forecast is for increasingly warmer temperatures over the next several days, which means we are \u00a0probably through the worst of the current system. \u00a0 But the weather can change on a dime in Central Alberta . . . . I confess I have extra covers ready, just in case.<\/h5>\n
And yes, those are colour photos! \u00a0The black and white feel is real on the prairies this time of year: \u00a0on a stormy day, things are shades of grey. \u00a0Underneath the snow you can find colour: \u00a0dandelions, a bit of green grass and even a few violas. \u00a0Spring is coming, and soon, but not today.<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
